Homemade Dog Food. Creating a Balanced Diet


We all want the best for our dogs and a big part of that is ensuring that they are receiving a proper diet. Reading nutritional information on store-bought dog foods can be confusing. Benefits of Homemade Dog Food

The benefits of homemade dog food include the proven ones:

  • Control over Ingredients
  • Customization to your dog and their specific needs
  • Increased Digestibility (depending on the recipe)
  • More Robust Microbiome (potential immune benefits)
  • Increased Palatability (aka more tasty)

There are also some anecdotal (unproven) benefits. We do not have good comparative studies on these, but they are possible and include benefits for:

  • Skin & Coat
  • Immune System
  • Activity Level
  • Joint Health
  • Dental Health
  • Behavior Changes

Nikki teaches about the building blocks of a creating balanced diet. These include:

She explains that nutrients within diets for dogs not only need to be "complete" meaning that nutrients meet minimal requirements for dogs (as described by AAFCO), but they also need to be BALANCED in ratio to each other. She also provides information on commonly deficient nutrients and how to read store bought dog food for ingredient information and caloric distribution.
